I was fortunate enought to be granted an 'Access All Areas' pass for this one, a triple bill of 80's retro at Bents Park, South Shields (July 2006). And a beautiful day it certainly was, in more ways than one. A packed out park lapped up the show from start to finish, as Altered Images, China Crisis and headline act Midge Ure performed their greatest hits from the 1980's.
Altered Images opened up the show, with Scottish singer Clare Grogan performing alongside a House Band that played very well on the day. Clare belted out hits such as Happy Birthday, I Could Be Happy and Don't Talk To Me About Love, amongst others, before China Crisis took their turn on stage. Gary and Eddie, who hail from Liverpool, played their chart hits Wishful Thinking, King In A Cathloic Style, African & White and Christian.
In the days leading up to the event I was really looking forward to seeing Midge Ure perform, after listening to Ultravox during my teens and beyond. Ultravox were my favourite band from the 80's, so it was great to hear Vienna and Dancing With Tears In My Eyes, as well as Fade To Grey and If I Was. An excellent performance by Midge, who went down really well with the crowd.
I met all the artists back stage before and after their performances, which was the highlight of the day. Those AAA passes are a bit of alright. I'll have some more of that!
