Aerial > Aerial Video > my patch (Part Five) - copt hill barrow, houghton le spring
Filmed : 29 December, 2017
Duration : 5 minutes, 20 seconds
It was the tail end of December 2017. Heavy snow was forecast to fall in the North-East of England, so there I was, charging up my drone batteries in preparation for a first flight above snow. I was looking forward to this one. Around 9am on Friday 29th December, the snow indeed began to fall. It lasted a few hours, during which time I was out there taking photographs until the snow finally eased off. Now was the time to fly. It was never going to be an action packed flight. All I wanted to do was circle the Copt Hill burial ground and highlight the snow on the nearby rooftops, which was very straightforward. Families came and went, building snowmen and riding their sledges. It's always nice to capture people on video from up a height, adding scale to the scene below. There was barely a breeze, which was a welcome bonus, considering the zero degrees temperature at ground level. The flight was almost aborted when my drone refused to fly because my battery was below the required temperature. I tried another battery and hey presto ... it was game on!
