Take in the view
Visitors can take a leisurely stroll along the promenade and take in the views at the mouth of the Tyne as boats make their way into or out of the busy river. Take a seat and just simply watch the world go by. There's also nearby fish and chip kiosks and ice cream parlours where you can grab something to eat. Due to the shelter of the pier alongside the beach it makes it perfect for the more adventurous explorer, as its home to many different water sports including kayaking, canoeing and boating. Find out about water sports in South Tyneside. It's steeped in history too, and was once used as a World War 1 RAF airbase. On a nice day if you're lucky you can still see the faint traces of the old landing strip near the Groyne lighthouse at the north end of the beach. The airbase catered for sea planes, land planes and airships which kept a watchful eye on our coastal defences and reporting enemy movements. Across the road from Littlehaven is North Marine Park and South Marine Park, perfect to extend your walk into, and Haven Point, our state of the art leisure complex. And all of the resort's attractions, restaurants and accommodation are just on its doorstep.
